Not My Daughter Has Strong Appeal for Teenage Girl Readers
The Booklist review of Not My Daughter notes that “Teen girls will be drawn in by this accessible novel’s focus on mother-daughter relationships and pact behavior.”
Publishers Weekly Reviews Not My Daughter: “Timely, Fresh, Thought-Provoking”
Here’s the Publishers Weekly review of Not My Daughter:
“Delinsky proves once again why she’s a perennial bestseller with this thought-provoking tale of three smart, popular teenage girls who make a pact to become pregnant and raise their babies together. Lily, Mary Kate, and Jess also happen to be the daughters of best friends Susan, Kate, and Sunny, and the mothers are thrown into a tailspin by this unexpected news. Susan, the principal of the town’s high school, has the most to lose, when the school’s superintendent and editor of the local newspaper question her abilities as a leader and mother, and other parents prove quick to blame her – a single mother herself who got pregnant as a teenager – as a poor role model. But all three women must come to grips with where they failed as mothers, how the dreams they had for their daughters are disappearing, and scathing smalltown judgment. Timely, fresh, and true-to-life, this novel explores multiple layers of motherhood and tackles rough questions. (Jan.)”
Not My Daughter Commended as “Emotionally Intelligent” by Kirkus Reviews
Here’s the Kirkus Reviews recommendation of Not My Daughter :
“Emotionally intelligent… Delinsky has a knack for exploring the battlefields of contemporary life. Three high school seniors – the top girls, academically, athletically and socially – form a pact to become pregnant in the Maine coastal village of Zaganack. Boasting old roots and rigid values, this company town for an upscale retailer is scandalized and all three [mothers] are devastated by their daughters’ incomprehensible decision. At PC Wool, a division of the post retailer that they created and run together, [the women] spend Saturdays dyeing yarn and trying to figure out why their girls traded in bright futures for teenage motherhood. Mother-daughter bonding, knitting and a ripped-from-the-headlines plot from Delinsky offer her fans what they want – high drama and realism.”

The Secret Between Us Earns Starred Library Journal Review
Library Journal (December 15, 2007) “Small-town physician Deborah Monroe has a plethora of family problems on her plate. Her husband has left, her teenage daughter Grace is angry, her young son Dylan has eye problems, her mother passed away, and her father drinks and passes judgment. Things get decidedly worse one rainy night when a man runs in front of her car, and Deborah makes a decision that has serious and rippling effects on herself and her family. So begins best-selling author Delinsky’s (Family Tree) latest page-turner, which deftly and realistically addresses family issues like parental expectations and disapproval, divorce and secrets, as well as small-town issues like preferential treatment and gossip. The concept of lying is also explored from multiple angles. In addition to being immensely readable, Delinsky’s latest is thought-provoking; readers will inevitably pause to consider what they would do if they found themselves in Deborah’s situation. Highly recommended for public libraries.”

The Secret Between Us Earns Publishers Weekly Starred Review
Publishers Weekly (October 15, 2007) “Relationships are brought to the limit in Delinsky’s splendid latest exploration of family dynamics. On a rainy night, Deborah Monroe and her teenage daughter, Grace, are driving home when their car hits a man. The victim, who turns out to be Grace’s history teacher, is unconscious but alive. Although Grace was driving, Deborah sends her home and takes responsibility for the accident when the cops show up.
Deborah is juggling a lot: as a family doctor, she is in private practice with her über-demanding widower father, who is trying to hide a drinking problem; her son, Dylan, is vision impaired; her mother’s death continues to affect the family; Deborah is still dealing with her ex-husband’s new, separate life; and her unmarriedsister, Jill, has just announced she’s pregnant. Grace’s guilt about not taking responsibility for the accident makes her withdraw from friends and family, and the accident victim turns out to have a more complex private life than anyone imagined. The author seamlessly resolves relationship issues without sentiment, throws in a promising romance for Deborah and offers a redemptive scene between Grace and her grandfather. Delinsky combines her understanding of human nature with absorbing, unpredictable storytelling-a winning combination.”
